Homeopathic medicine has been a controversial practice since its creation. Although no system of proof exists, homeopathic medicine practitioners swear by its results. Modern medicine aggressively disputes all claims that homeopathic medicine provides any positive effects on a patient beyond a placebo effect. If a patient receives homeopathic medicine for bacterial or viral infection, without acceptable pharmaceutical medicine or vaccines, the patient faces the same level of risk as before. Beyond these instances, homeopathic medicine poses little inherent risk.

    * Homeopathic medicine is based on the idea that sickness is more a representation of self than an outside entity causing the symptoms. Rather than give patients medicine, advocates of homeopathic medicine produce remedies that contain a substance known for causing similar symptoms that the patient claims.

    * These remedies are created by a system of dilution that causes the final product to most likely contain no traces of the original substance. In the presence of actual disease, modern medicine continues to exclaim that homeopathic medicine provides no benefit to a patient.

    * Since the final remedy or medicine contains trace amounts, if any, of the original substance, it does not threaten the health of the patient. Advocates of conventional medicine state, however, that the risk does not lie in the remedy, but in the belief that the remedy will function as medicine for the patient. If a person contracts a bacterial infection, modern medicine suggests the usage of antibiotics which will likely cure any sickness before bodily damage occurs. Now, if the same individual takes a homeopathic medicine instead of medically recommended medicine, they could easily be putting themselves at a grave risk. Thus, some argue that this belief in just homeopathic forms of medicine can be fatally dangerous.

    * Homeopathy utilizes some general ingredients to create their some 3000 different types of medicine. Some ingredients include; poison ivy, quartz, oyster shell, calcium sulfide, and many others that in active form, would cause significant medical concern. Homeopathic medicine witnessed a late 20th century resurgence, most likely due to money-making potential foreseen by opportunistic businesses. The plausibility for homeopathic medicine to help an individual lacks empirical evidence, but studies do note the potential for placebo effect.

Like many forms of alternative medicine, Homeopathy claims proof to the effectiveness of its medicine. This makes doctors and health officials weary of advocating any potential for homeopathic medicine to address sickness. Beyond placebo effect, which can be undeniably strong, homeopathic medicine lacks the scientific findings to grant true feasibility as a health option.

Nuclear medicine includes both nuclear medicine treatment, as well as medical imaging. The creation of nuclear medicine occurred from a collaboration between several unique fields of academic study. Both forms of nuclear medicine utilize radioactive material to either treat or diagnose a variety of diseases. The field of medicine has advanced dramatically due to the discovery of nuclear medicine and the range of possibilities it offers.

    * Nuclear medical imaging refers to the infusion of radiopharmaceuticals that react in specific ways to different human organs and tissue. Unlike a common x-ray which searches for anatomical irregularities, nuclear medicine imaging allows a doctor to view the functioning capability of an organ or tissue. The advantages to medicine are numerous, often allowing a physician to detect issues before any physical symptoms arise. Since the radiopharmaceutical reacts predictably within the human body the active presence of disease will alter the way the body processes the compound.

    * After the radiopharmaeceutical is administered into the body, a technician will capture an image of the emissions and its effect on the targeted site. The process of either taking the radiopharmacetucial orally or intravenously is generally painless and non-invasive. Several fields of medicine utilize nuclear medicine imaging to detect anything from infection to brain irregularities. External detectors are able to capture cellular normality and physiology from nuclear medicine due to radioactive decay which is a phenomenon that describes the way the material emits radiation and particles.

    * Nuclear medicine therapy utilizes radiopharmaceuticals to treat certain types of cancer and diseases. Specific types of medicine are utilized to treat different ailments as they react to each body part differently. The radiopharmaceutical releases a short emission of radiation to target specific areas, hopefully minimizing any adverse effects to surrounding tissue. These procedures are generally performed on an outpatient basis, as the nuclear based medicine poses little risk to other people and the side effects are generally manageable. The medicine therapy is generally used in conjunction with other treatment measures and requires pre-patient counselling so the patient understands the risks and benefits of the medicine.

    * As the science of medicine expands, doctors will be able to target smaller molecular levels more acutely. These expected advancements in nuclear medicine will allow for imaging of smaller processes and the safer treatment of cancer or disease.

Statistics show constant increases in cancer rates and the future of treatment relies of nuclear medicine. The possibilities for these materials to revolutionize modern medicine are just being recognized and will only increase in the future.

Medicine School

Getting accepted to a prominent medicine school requires an acute sense of dedication and responsibility. The process begins far before you ever fill out a medicine school applications. Long before that process, an individual needs to ensure that they can complete all the necessary coursework and express interest in medicine in order to gain acceptance to a respected medicine school.

    * Most institutions recognize the need for aspiring doctors to work towards a career in medicine before they even attempt to apply for medicine school. This starts during high school with a focus on science and other courses that would cover the myriad roles of modern medicine. Since many universities offer pre-med programs, it is extremely important for the prospective medicine school applicant to gain high SAT scores and top of the line grades so they can get into the best institution their grades permit.

    * Once in college, the hopeful student of medicine should major in a premed program to make sure they complete all the necessary requirements for medicine school while also receiving necessary guidance and assistance. Premed programs cover specific science courses that the large majority of medicine schools require to gain acceptance. Some students focus all their time on high marks and fail to demonstrate a pronounced interest in the field of medicine. In this light, students are encouraged to work in some type of medicine-related job prior to applying for medicine school. Sometime during a student’s third or fourth year they begin preparations for the medical college acceptance test. Much like the SAT, the medical college acceptance test, or MCAT, is content-based and focuses on all natural sciences that need expertise to gain entry to medicine school.

    * After gaining entry into medicine school a student will focus on general studies of medicine for their initial two years. Then a hopeful medicine school graduate will begin to focus on specific interest in their latter two years to prepare them for a residency of their liking. High marks from a leading medicine school will often guarantee a graduate at least a strong consideration from a residency of their liking.

The route to becoming a doctor is fraught with obstacles that intend to ensure a student’s acumen in the field of medicine. Many recognize the statistics that show the vast majority of those admitted to medicine school will continue on to becoming a doctor.

Medicine History

The role of medicine and medicine history in our society is immense and touches on every aspect of human life. From the time when life expectancy for an individual barely hovered around 30 years of age until now with people surpassing one hundred years regularly, medicine history has seemingly multiplied ten fold in just the last fifty to one hundred years.

    * Medicine history shows us the shortcomings of medical expertise and practice in many societies. Either religious groups claiming that health is based off culture or belief or a mere individual acting as a professional, the lack of a uniform medicine practice generally hurt the population more than these practices could have ever aided their respective populations. For example, a common practice in medicine history throughout the world is the use of ritual and religious practice to treat clearly physiological issues. Many believed the role of medicine and health to be strictly attributable to one’s religious doctrine.

    * Another role of medicine history is to illuminate the grossly uneven treatment between the poor and rich. Poverty-stricken areas were generally plagued by disease and plague due to filthy conditions and close quarters without any form of proper medicine. These individuals often had absolutely no access to the simplest form of any medicine practice and would quickly pass on their ailments between houses and communities. Interestingly, the fission between rich and poor with regards to health care has remained wide in the history of modern medicine.

    * Medicine history would forever change with the introduction of penicillin and similar medicine that offered treatment to a wide-array of bacteria-based illness. General access to medicine began to increase in civilized populations of the world helping to lessen the transfer of disease between individuals. In addition, the uniformity of vaccination practices allowed for communes of people to no longer worry about the spread of bacteria through close proximity. Most specifically in public education, a sickness that one had in a class generally would cause a larger situation of sick children. After disease control and prevention became a part of modern medicine, guidelines were introduced to limit this situation.

Looking towards the future, many recent innovations in the field of medicine seem poised to again revolutionize medicine history. Nuclear medicine, biologics, and new discoveries in disease treatment are relatively new in the larger view of medicine history and will likely grow exponentially. Modern medicine also recognizes the benefits to ensuring all parts of the globalized world have at least some access to rudimentary care.

Role of the Medicine Journal

Increased technology and content-sharing between modern doctors and scientists created an unexpected influx of individuals seeking to compile this wealth of information in a comprehensive medicine journal. The Internet has undeniably aided the practice of medicine and research, allowing people to utilize other studies from a prominent medicine journal as the basis to their research. Rather than replicating oft-completed studies to build upon, the modern medicine journal harbors a sense of shared research permitting professionals access to previously performed medicine research and findings.

    * Common fields of study have been compromised due to the general openness of the Internet. Any individual may publish information or research in no regard to accreditation or accuracy. The field of medicine recognized this general problem and attempted to reduce fraudulent research in the respective medicine journal. Several forms of medicine journal review are currently practiced in a number of enormous publications, however, the fact remains that certain falsified research leaks into the collective view of modern medicine.

    * Another problem exists with the common medicine journal. Individual self-diagnosing discourages the general population from generic research on perceived symptoms or illnesses. Although the field of medicine owes much of its modern role to information sharing and mutual goals, the Internet tends to lack proper vetting processes to remove false claims and unaccepted forms of medicine.

    * Any modern medicine journal practices a specific way of checking information against improper research techniques or premises. These techniques generally include a system of peer review, editorial board review, or a combination of both. This helps to insure that the research includes acceptable accreditation from specific boards of medicine and the proper citation of previous sources, among many other criterion.

    * There has been a noticeable shift over the last decade from journals that required a subscription, to more openly accessible online medicine journals. The ease at which researchers that work in the field of medicine can now access numerous attempts at a specific study or try to understand the reasons for unexpected findings is notable.

The Internet, much like any open database or system of information exchange, has its specific advantages and disadvantages. With the advent of the modern Internet and medicine journal comes new ways for people to exchange research and medical information that directly leads to a type of content-sharing that aids eventual breakthroughs and revolutions in the field of medicine.

Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine holds a holistic philosophy on the treatment of medicine. Practitioners argue that a patient requires their entire body analyzed as a whole in order to reach any diagnosis. Naturopathic medicine discourages the use of synthetic medicine and invasive surgery, instead favoring the idea that the human body maintains intrinsic healing ability. As with many forms of alternative medicine, the medical community discredits the ability of naturopathic medicine to aid against sickness.

    * After the great strides that modern medicine took during the mid-20th century, naturopathic medicine practices lacked a certain credulity. Prior to this, many schools and systems of accreditation accepted naturopathic medicine as a prominent form of medicine practice. Although practitioners of naturopathic medicine continued to exist, the federal government, as well as several state governments, started to limit their practice of medicine.

   * Even though the community of medicine seems to discourage the practice of naturopathic medicine, many of its core components were adopted as commonplace in modern medicine. These include preventative care and an overall sense of keeping the body in good shape. The overarching principles of naturopathic medicine are included in an oath not unlike a common medicine practitioner. The main point of naturopathic medicine, as set-forth in the oath, include; doing no harm in providing the best care with the least patient risk, understand the healing power of nature that exists in every person, treat the entire illness rather than attempting to reduce individual symptoms, encourage an individual responsibility towards health, diagnose patients in consideration of all underlying issues, and encourage a world-wide understanding of medicine.

    * Since the advent of modern medicine, naturopathic practice declined due to the inherent problems in attempting to make a uniform system of accreditation. In response to this role-back in naturopathic education, individuals began claiming a certain level of knowledge while lacking any proper training in medicine. Recently, many states have again permitted naturopathic education and allow several institutions to offer degrees.

    * Similar problems exist between supporters of naturopathic medicine and the larger medical field as the case with most forms of alternative medicine. The treatment practices of naturopathic medicine fail to comply with modern views of medicine and can theoretically cause further damage to an individual who refuses antibiotics or similarly important medications to treat disease.

Naturopathic medicine encourages individuals to treat their bodies with respect and care. Understandably, modern forms of medicine agree with these and many other views for the study of naturopathic medicine, however, many note the lack of uniformity and scientific findings. The role of naturopathic medicine will likely continue but an overarching shift to naturopathic practices remains unlikely.

Orthopedic Surgery

The modern school of medicine has witnessed great strides in Orthopedic surgery and medicine over the past few decades. Specifically, many operations that once required potentially dangerous open incisions are now possible through arthroscopic measures giving modern medicine more ways to aid patients. The collective school of medicine recognizes the benefits of arthroscopy due to the quick healing time and reduced chance of complications down the line.

    * The ability for orthopedic surgeons to address difficult joint disorders through arthroscopic measures has advanced the entire field of medicine. Arthroscopic surgery refers to the usage of small incisions to identify possible joint deformity due to cartilage or ligament tears, arthritis, or bone malformation. Generally, arthroscopic surgery still requires anesthesia and pain medicine, but the benefits to the patient during healing time are numerous and the larger school of medicine encourages this type of surgery over all others. In place of large incisions, doctors place a small camera device inside of the troubled area which than broadcasts a large screen in the operating room. Once the issue has been confirmed, the surgeon uses small instruments to repair or remove the damage.

    * Arthroscopic surgery provides specific advantages for children and the elderly who were formerly discouraged from receiving operations by the larger school of medicine due to the inherent risk of complication. The collective orthopedic school of medicine now notes that joint disorders that often plague adults usually formed sometime during their adolescence. The ability for the modern field of medicine to address these joint disorders earlier in life provides many advantages for later quality of life. Elderly patients are historically discouraged by the larger school of medicine from receiving perceived unnecessary surgical procedures. Arthroscopy allows elderly patients to receive joint operations with little to no risk providing a keen advantage to modern medicine and to the quality of life at an older age.

    * Another primary benefit that arthroscopic surgery provides the school of medicine is a much quicker healing time. This cuts down on the need for post-operative pain medicine, a growing problem in America that many in the larger school of medicine are becoming specifically concerned with. Modern medicine also notes the ability for patients that receive arthroscopic surgery to return to normal activity quickly, sometimes as soon as just a few weeks.

The collective orthopedic school of medicine has embraced arthroscopic surgery and utilized its advantages in ways never before thought possible. Arthroscopic surgery provides clear first-hand benefits like quicker healing time and less surgical risk. Secondary benefits also exist such as a decreased need for pain medicine. In full, the modern school of medicine has barely scraped the surface on what arthroscopic surgery could do for doctors and individuals alike.

The term alternative medicine refers to any type of medicine practice that falls outside of conventional and widely accepted views of medicine. Although alternative medicine has been in practice for centuries, recent studies have shown a sharp increase in usage over the past decade. Oftentimes, doctors may suggest alternative medicine to supplement more conventional medicine practices. Issues surrounding alternative medicine stem from the lack of standardization that inherently exists with medicine of this type.

    * Alternative medicine is a non-linear grouping of anything established to be outside of normal medicine practice. The problem here rests in the fact that several of the medicine practices that fall under this umbrella are used in everyday life by millions of people without any recognition that it is actually known as an alternative medicine.

    * Generally, alternative medicine is used for ailments that have remained elusive to modern medicine. Problems like arthritis, chronic pain, and back pain contain no inherent cure or treatment that is accepted by the world of medicine. Some doctors will prescribe narcotic pain killers and/or muscle relaxers to treat the symptoms while others suggest invasive surgery, but the only consensus surrounding many of these problems is a lack of consensus. Supporters of alternative medicine often cite testimonials that prove the ability to cure these ailments with routes contrary to the normal practice of medicine.

   * Many hospitals and health treatment centers offer several forms of alternative medicine to their patients either instead of, or in addition to, common medicine. Statistics have shown a yearly increase in hospitals offering these types of services for nearly a decade and they include; therapeutic massage, chiropractic services, and acupuncture.

    * Federal and state health agencies have had trouble with the increase in alternative medicine. Since many of these practitioners receive little to no licensing for their unproven techniques, they pose a possiblethreat to the well-being of patients and the larger population. Certain officials have suggested creating some type of licensing technique for specific medicine practices, but incorporating an umbrella term like alternative medicine under a comprehensive law seems unlikely.

    * People considering alternative medicine should be wary of false promises and quick fixes. Always consult with a licensed physician before changing or adding any currently prescribed medicine, as this could have possible fatal consequences.

Many medical doctors harbor mixed opinions about the current practice of alternative medicine. In general, physicians will offer a ‘why not try it’ technique to patients but not suggest an overhaul in current, widely-accepted treatment techniques. Still, many practitioners of alternative medicine make persuasive displays and arguments for the benefits of utilizing these techniques.

Often confused with general physicians, practitioners of internal medicine are generally known as one of the more specialized members in the field of medicine. Internal medicine refers to a complex web of specializations in medicine that allows an internal medicine physician, or internist, to diagnose several ailments or chronic diseases at once. Internal medicine physicians often work in hospitals or on a referral basis because of their ability to detect any disease known in modern medicine.

* To become a practicing internist several years of specialized training, in addition to the general medicine practice training, is required to insure the highest degree of ability. After the basic and specialized training in medicine is over, a physician practicing internal medicine has generally studied for at least twelve years. The field of internal medicine includes general study and also refers to 13 recognized subsections, among which include; cardiology, rheumatology, pulmonology, nephrology, sports medicine, adolescent medicine, allergy and immunology, gastroenterology, infectious disease, geriatrics, oncology, hematology, and endocrinology.

* Whereas children see pediatricians as their general physician, adults will often choose to see an internal medicine specialist as they can address a myriad of medical issues. Physicians can choose to practice general internal medicine or receive further training to specialize in one of the aforementioned fields of medicine.

* Another purview of practicing internal medicine is the ability to combine several fields of medicine to diagnose a patient. This can aid in situations when a patient requires knowledge on preventative medicine, indicates possible psychological issues or drug and alcohol addiction. Internal medicine doctors are equipped to identify the gambit of possible ailments known in modern medicine.

* When a patient visits a more generic type of physician and shows inconclusive symptoms, they will often be referred to a general internal medicine practitioner. If the ailments seem contained to a specific body part or system, they will usually be referred to an internist with specialization in that field of medicine.

* Due to their cross-specialization in various fields of medicine, hospitals generally employ several internists to address patients that show indication of multiple diseases or inconclusive symptoms. Although they focus on non-surgical medicine, internal medicine physicians are still equipped to identify any possible route to addressing the underlying ailment.

Internal medicine crosses all fields of modern medicine. These doctors posses special skills and training that allows them to look at a medical situation from any angle. Older adults are often recommended to see an internist to learn preventative measures and learn of possible medical situations before they arise.
